HOUSE OF DOORS, INC RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION AND PAINTING OF HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES
MAINTENANCE OF HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES SHOULD BE DONE IN ACCORDANCE WITH SDI 124-98 “MAINTENANCE OF STANDARD STEEL DOORS AND FRAMES”
PRIMING AND PAINTING OF HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES SHOULD BE DONE IN ACCORDANCE WITH SDI A250.8, SECTIONS 2.1.3, 2.1.4 AND 2.1.5. WE ALSO RECOMMEND FOLLOWING ANSI A250 RECOMMENDATIONS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO A250.8.4.1-4.6 AND APPENDIX “B” LISTED BELOW
A250.8-2003 “RECOMMENDED SPECIFICATIONS FOR STANDARD STEEL DOORS AND FRAMES”:
APPENDIX B, GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS, AESTHETICS
“THE PRODUCTION OF STEEL DOORS AND FRAMES RELIES ON A VARIETY OF MANUFACTURING PROCESSES INCLUDING SPOT WELDING, PROJECTION WELDING, ARC WELDING GROUND SMOOTH, GRINDING FILLING ETC. THESE PROCESSES MAY RESULT IN A SHOW-THROUGH AFTER APPLICATION OF FINISHED PAINT. THESE CHARACTERISTICS ARE INHERENT IN PRODUCTION AND ARE NOT TO BE CONSIDERED AS MANUFACTURING DEFECTS.
THE SHOW-THROUGH CHARACTERISTICS INCREASE AS THE PAINT GLOSS INCREASES. THIS STANDARD RECOMMENDS A MAXIMUM PAINT GLOSS OF 20% REFLECTANCE, MEASURED USING A 60* GLOSS METER, WHICH SHOULD BE SUITABLE FOR MOST APPLICATIONS. TRANSLUCENT PAINTS MAY EMPHASIZE SHOW-THROUGH CHARACTERISTICS AND THEIR USE IS NOT RECOMMENDED.”
HOUSE OF DOORS, INC DOES NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF GLOSS PAINTS. SPRAYED ON GLOSS PAINTS ARE PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT TO USE. IF GLOSS PAINTS ARE USED, A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF CLEANING, SANDING AND PAINTING WILL BE REQUIRED AND MAY STILL EMPHASIZE SHOW-THROUGH CHARACTERISTICS.
HOUSE OF DOORS, INC SUPPLIES HOLLOW METAL DOORS THAT ARE FURNISHED WITH A HIGH GRADE, LOW GLOSS, BAKED-ON PRIME PAINT THAT PROVIDES AN EXTREMELY HIGH LEVEL OF PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION, ABRASION AND WEATHER, AND IS AN EXCELLENT BASE FOR FINISH PAINT. THIS IS A PRIMER AND REQUIRES FIELD FINISHING. IF THE PRIMED SURFACE IS REMOVED OR DAMAGED, THE EXPOSED METAL MUST BE REPRIMED WITH A SUITABLE RUST INHIBITIVE PRIMER BEFORE TOP COATING.
THE APPLICATION OF FINISH PAINT, USING EITHER A BRUSH, ROLLER OR SPRAY EQUIPMENT, SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PAINT MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS. IF SPRAY EQUIPMENT IS USED, CONSULT WITH THE PAINT SUPPLIER ON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CORRECT THINNER OR SOLVENTS. DO NOT USE LACQUER THINNER OR OTHER SOLVENTS THAT MAY REACT ON THE PRIMER COAT.
HOUSE OF DOORS, INC DOES NOT RECOMMEND USING BLACK OR DARK COLORED PAINT ON EXTERIOR DOORS.
HOUSE OF DOORS, INC DOES NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF WATER BASED PAINTS AS FINAL TOP COATS. IF WATER BASED PAINTS ARE USED AS A FINISH COAT, YOU SHOULD FIRST PRIME THE DOOR AND/OR FRAME WITH A PRIMER WITH RUST INHIBITORS RECOMMENDED BY THE PAINT MANUFACTURER FOR BARE STEEL. IF THE DOOR IS NOT PRIMED IN THIS WAY, ALL SCRATCHES AND NICKS THAT EXPOSE BARE METAL WILL DEVELOP RUST. IT IS ALSO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO CLEAN ANY AND ALL METAL PARTICLES THAT MAY BE ON THE PRIME COAT PRIOR TO FINISH PAINTING. THESE MAY INCLUDE SMALL METAL SHAVINGS FROM SANDING OR OTHER JOBSITE OPERATIONS AND WILL CLING TO THE DOOR AND/OR FRAME WITH STATIC ELECTRICITY. THESE PARTICLES WILL SHOW RUST THROUGH THE FINISH PAINT BUT ARE NOT RUST OF THE ACTUAL DOOR AND/OR FRAME.
FOR BEST RESULTS HOUSE OF DOORS, INC RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES:
AIR DRY APPLICATIONS
AVOID PAINTING IN EXTREMELY COLD OR DAMP WEATHER. SUGGESTED TEMPERATURE RANGE OF 50 - 90* F
SAND DOOR AND FRAME SURFACES LIGHTLY WITH NO. 300 OR 320 EMERY CLOTH OR STEEL WOOL
CLEAN DOOR AND FRAME SURFACES USING A MILD SOLVENT SUCH AS MINERAL SPIRITS OR A MILD CITRUS CLEANER. DO NOT USE STRONG CLEANING AGENTS, ACIDS, KETONES, OR LACQUER THINNER
DRY DOOR AND FRAME SURFACES COMPLETELY. DO NOT USE OILED OR TACK RAGS TO DRY DOOR AND/OR FRAME SURFACES
APPLY FINISH PAINT FOLLOWING PAINT MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS
NOTES:
LATEX PAINTS MAY REQUIRE, DEPENDING ON ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS, UP TO 30 DAYS BEFORE THE PAINT IS FULLY CURED
TO AVOID RUSTING WITH LATEX TOPCOAT PAINT, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO SAND AND RE-PRIME WITH A RUST INHIBITIVE PRIMER ANY AREAS WHERE THE FACTORY APPLIED PRIMER HAS BEEN REMOVED OR SCRATCHED THROUGH.
THE USE OF HIGH GLOSS PAINT IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS IT ACCENTUATES THE VISIBILITY OF ALL WELDS/IMPERFECTIONS
JOBSITE STORAGE AND HANDLING IS CRITICAL. TO ENSURE THE INTEGRITY OF THE PRIME PAINTED COATING, JOBSITE STORAGE MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ANSI/SDI A250.10 AND HMMA 840.
FIELD BAKED-ON FINISHES
AVOID PAINTING IN EXTREMELY COLD OR DAMP WEATHER. SUGGESTED TEMPERATURE RANGE OF 50 - 90* F
SAND DOOR AND FRAME SURFACES LIGHTLY WITH NO. 300 OR 320 EMERY CLOTH OR STEEL WOOL
CLEAN DOOR AND FRAME SURFACES USING A MILD SOLVENT SUCH AS MINERAL SPIRITS OR A MILD CITRUS CLEANER. DO NOT USE STRONG CLEANING AGENTS, ACIDS OR LACQUER THINNER
DRY DOOR AND FRAME SURFACES COMPLETELY. DO NOT USE OILED OR TACK RAGS TO DRY DOOR AND/OR FRAME SURFACES
APPLY FINISH PAINT FOLLOWING PAINT MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS
BAKE FRAMES AND DOORS AS SPECIFIED BY THE PAINT MANUFACTURER - OVEN TEMPERATURE OF DOORS TO BE 160*F AND 300*F FOR FRAMES OR AS SPECIFIED BY PAINT MANUFACTURER
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE GUIDELINES/RECOMMENDATIONS VOIDS ANY AND ALL WARRANTY EXPRESSED AND/OR OTHERWISE
